Keeping the insertion site free from microorganisms is essential to prevent catheter-related infections. The best approach emphasizes starting with thorough hand hygiene, then using sterile gloves, and maintaining a sterile technique throughout the procedure. Hand hygiene reduces the number of skin bacteria that can contaminate the site or the equipment. Sterile gloves create a protective barrier that helps keep the sterile field uncontaminated as you work around the insertion area. Sterile technique means a controlled, sterile environment for all items involved—proper skin antisepsis of the insertion site, sterile catheters and dressings, and careful handling to avoid contact with nonsterile surfaces once the sterile field is established. Together, these steps minimize the risk of introducing infection during IV catheter placement.

Gloves alone don’t address microbes on the hands before entering the sterile field, and omitting hand hygiene leaves a high risk of contamination. A soap and water wash after insertion doesn’t prevent contamination during the procedure and isn’t a substitute for maintaining asepsis throughout the insertion. Sterile technique isn’t optional; without it, the sterile field can be compromised, increasing infection risk.
